Moreno Valley Arts Council
January 15, 1987 - the MVAC filed Articles of Incorporation. Started some six or seven years
earlier, by nine members in the community trying to create an arts presence through a local
theater group and an annual arts and crafts show, we have slowly but surely evolved, with a
significant record of successful beginnings. Our annual ArtsFest has grown over the past twenty-
three years from a mediocre fall event to the successful summer attraction it is now, with talented
artists on a waiting list to participate each year. We've sponsored Missoula Children's Theatre
since 1981, to the delight of hundreds of Moreno Valley children and their parents.
It's hard to believe Angel Fire Mountain Theatre has been going strong since 1996 and is well
into the planning stages for the next Season of Summer Theatre. We were their sponsoring
agency until they succeeded in obtaining their independent non-profit status.
We debuted Holiday Market in 1998, which we've since turned over to the Community Center as
a significant fund-raiser for them while still providing a profitable venue for area artists.
We continue to expand some new programs introduced in 2001. We've brought Art Days and
Conversations in Art into the schools, thus allowing far more children to participate in these
enriching events. The success and popularity of our Arts About Town has established these as
permanent fixtures in the MVAC programming. We’ve helped sponsor the development of the
Playground at the Angel Fire Community Center—purchasing a variety of hands-on arts-related
items (stone animals and musical instruments) for permanent installation at the Playground. We
have helped sponsor music related events such as the MVHS blue grass concert. We currently
sponsor the newly formed Northern New Mexico Artist’s Guild, helping to enrich and promote
artists in the valley. The development of a website for the Moreno Valley Arts Council has
generated much interest and our “hit” count grows monthly. We hope to continue working with
the MVHS and the Cimarron school district, along with the many local artists to bring even more
art events to the valley.

MVAC Valerie McKinley Memorial Scholarship Fund!

The Moreno Valley Arts Council Board of Directors has a Scholarship named the
Valerie McKinley Memorial Scholarship. Valerie, a local artist and member of the Arts
Council, lost her battle with cancer on January 28, 2005.
"We who knew Valerie, loved her. She put her heart into everything she did, and most
especially, into her beautiful pastel paintings." (Katherine McDermott, MVAC Board
President)
The Arts Council will create the Scholarship with an initial deposit of $500.00, and
commit to doing so annually. "We know it's not a lot money, we're hoping it will grow.
We're planting a seed in honor of Valerie" (Katherine McDermott)
If you'd like to contribute, please send your tax deductible gift to Moreno Valley Arts
Council, PO Box 335, Angel Fire, NM 87710. Designate "Valerie McKinley Memorial
Scholarship" on the memo line.
The Scholarship will be awarded to a Senior in the Cimarron School District. Interested
Seniors from Cimarron High and Moreno Valley High School may apply to the Arts
Council, and the winning student will receive the scholarship at Graduation. "We're
working right now to create application packets. Some criteria will be evidence of
passion and commitment to visual arts. Slides, photos or digital images of completed
works will be a part of the submission requirements.
Application Deadline: April 25
